Care in Relocating

Mother and daughter, Laura and Amanda are very close. Laura cares for all of her child’s needs and has for her whole life. Amanda, who is in her 50s, has special needs.

Laura, who is now in her 70s, has cared for Amanda in every way, including dressing, toileting, food preparation, and medication. She even makes sure that Amanda has a social life, by sending her to community programs that keep her happy and healthy.

As Laura advances in age, she wants to make sure that Amanda will be cared for after she is gone. So, she made the decision to move to another state, where Amanda could be closer to other family members and cared for by Amanda’s sister. That’s when Laura contacted LCD.

All of Amanda’s doctors in the Philadelphia area know that Laura has been caring for Amanda since she was a child. But, Laura was concerned that the doctors in her new state would not understand and pose a problem with Amanda’s care. Staff attorney Sherry Thomas took on Laura and Amanda’s case and set up a guardianship hearing.

Sherry worked with Amanda’s doctor on a deposition, as well as prepared the family for the hearing. Sherry represented Laura at the hearing, where the court granted Laura and her other daughter co-guardianship. They would now be legally responsible for Amanda’s physical health and financial matters.

As a result of Sherry’s work, Laura and Amanda are able to relocate. Laura now has the peace of mind that Amanda will be well taken care of for the rest of her life.
