Research shows that the death rate among African American women battling breast cancer remains three times higher than non-African American women who have the disease. In 2014, the American Cancer Society and the NFL awarded a three year grant to Health Annex, one of the three sites serviced by LCD’s MLP with the Family Counseling & Practice Network. Designed to reduce this disparity, the grant also enabled the formation of Health Annex’s Sister Circles, a group made up of many participants who identify as breast cancer survivors.
The Sister Circles take place in a comfortable and non-threatening setting emphasizing education and the power of community. Recently, LCD staff attorney, Brendan Corbalis, led a lively and informative round-table discussion entitled “Estate Planning 101”. Community outreach such as this furthers LCD’s mission to provide direct legal services to persons with physical disabilities and demonstrates its commitment to a holistic approach to addressing the social determinants impacting positive health care outcomes.
